John Ulloa Opening Ceremony Seminar

John Ulloa is a Professor of History and Cultural Anthropology at Skyline College. His research examines the global diffusion of lowriding culture from the Mexican-American barrios to various countries outside of the United States including Japan, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Guam, Saudi Arabia, France, Germany, Russia, Sweden, Denmark and Thailand. He is an active member of the Bay Area lowriding community and he is a member of the Sin Nombre Familia Car Club. His forthcoming book documenting this research will be released soon.

Professor Ulloa will be  speaking about how his work documents the worldwide spread of lowriding culture. Lowriding has been associated with Mexican-Americans since World War II. Since then, lowriding has transcended the confines of Mexican-American barrios, and beginning in the 1990s, diffused to Japan. In the contemporary period lowriding communities have strongholds in Japan, Brazil, New Zealand, France, and Sweden. Social media has been a significant unifying force in bringing the global lowriding community together in cyberspace. Internet websites that specialize in the sale and distribution of lowrider customization parts provide accessibility. My work is the culmination of more than two decades of research on Lowriding culture. My methodology is a synthesis of ethnohistory, participant-observation, multi-cited research, and cyber-ethnography.
