Problem Focused Coping

Problem-focused coping techniques are really focused on understanding and addressing the problem itself.  Perhaps you have to locate medical equipment to help a loved one or your child is struggling in school because of the loved one's illness.  A parent's  goal is to address the problem directly by following these steps to identify the information you/your family needs:

  • Identify the problem
  • Brainstorm possible solutions
  • Research the solutions - get more information
  • Take action based on that information
  • Re-evaluate -- sometimes a strategy doesn't work.  Go back to step 2 and try another possible solution.

There are a number of community resources available to help families to address the problem they are facing.  We have provided links to developmentally appropriate resources on the pages designed for youth caregivers and bereaved youth of various ages.
