Welcome to the newly named, Women and Gender Equity Center! Our center was originally founded in 2006 as the ASI Women's Center. In 2013, we became the Gender Equity Center. As we strive to ensure that our efforts in the center are aligned with the evolving needs of our campus, we recently engaged in a forward-thinking exercise and consultative process to imagine its future. Since June 2022, we are the Women and Gender Equity Center, or WGEC! This name change reflects the hopes, dreams, and goals shared by our campus community as the center strives to meet the evolving needs of our students.
While our name is changing, our commitment to inclusion is not. Student and professional staff at the center have been working hard since our space's founding to facilitate educational, fun, and inclusive programming. Our team will continue to maintain a brave space welcome to all students on campus. Our programs will continue to focus on issues pertaining to Women, Trans & Gender Nonconforming Communities, and Parenting Students. We are dedicated to being a gender-inclusive space that supports student success, belonging, and equity for all!
Building on second-wave feminism’s creed of “the personal is political,” we are guided by principles of intersectional feminism: we recognize that while all women experience oppression, we also all experience oppression in varying forms based on race, age, class, gender, sexuality, dis/ability, etc. With that in mind, we want everyone at the Women and Gender Equity Center to feel supported, included and represented. We look forward to connecting soon!
The WGEC is intentionally inclusive of transgender, nonbinary, intersex, and gender non-conforming folks.
