HD in Australia: Darwin, Australia's Northern Territory (HD495 or HD497)

Outside Darwin

Program Overview:

This winter, in partnership with the YMCA Top End, CSUSM HD students will travel to Darwin, the Capital city of Northern Territory, Australia. Darwin is actually closer to Jakarta, Indonesia than to Sydney and also closer to Singapore than to Melbourne. These nearby areas influence the dress and food as much as does the rest of Australia. Darwinians enjoy a cosmopolitan and relaxed tropical atmosphere and culture.  Darwin is sometimes referred to as the Last Frontier, with over 10,000 kms of uninhabited coastline. It was founded in the 19th century and now has a population of 116,215 with a large proportion of Aboriginal people, which justifies the fact that the town is often called 'the multicultural capital of Australia'.  During this 5 week course, CSUSM students will participate in two weeks of class online during December, then, after a week off for holidays, they will head to Darwin for 3 weeks. CSUSM students will work with the staff and volunteers at one of the community-based YMCA programs for “territory youth”, participate in course meetings each evening, and take part in cultural exploration. Dr. Eliza Bigham, in CSUSM's Department of Human Development, will be your program leader. Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to engage with the “real” Australia and apply your skills and knowledge while learning!
