Summer in Japan 2016:  HD 497:  Exploring Cultural Differences

Program Highlights

Tokyo is a metropolitan city that sustains a blend of modernization and traditionalism. Students will visit the mecca of Cosplay and Anime as well as the Sensoji temple and get a glimpse of the deity of mercy.  A stroll along the heart of modern fashion and design, Harajuku, is added to the schedule along with an opportunity to come face-to-face with a 400 lbs. sumo wrestler. Students will gain a first-hand experience in the differences and similarities of Southern California and Tokyo. Needless to mention, students will indulge in authentic Japanese cuisine ranging from ramen, sushi, tempura, and much more.  At the end of the course, students will have a more concrete understanding of Japan as well as gain a new awareness of the US culture.

Field trips to:

  • Akihabara – Visit the mecca of Cosplay and Anime
  • Harajuku & Shibuya – Stroll along the heart of fashion for young adults
  • Asakusa – Experience the blend of traditional temples and cutting edge modern architecture 
  • Ryogoku – Witness traditional Japanese sport – Sumo wrestling
  • Toyo University Stay/Visit – Engage in conversations with Japanese college students
  • Isetan Department store – Indulge in the hub of extraordinary commodities

May 23 to June 27, 2016

On campus: May 23, 25; June 20, 27 (Including field work at San Marcos on May 30)

Abroad: June 2 to 11, 2016 (depart US on June 1)

Academic Focus

HD 497 Applied Research in Human Development

Language of Instruction:

English. No knowledge of the Japanese language or culture assumed.

Requirements:

  • Class level:  Students with upper-division standing by the end Spring 2016
  • GPA:  2.75 and above; good academic standing to departure

Units:

4 units of HD 497 through Extended Learning

Housing:

Students will be housed in shared dormitories at Toyo University and have daily breakfast there. 

Estimated Cost:  $2,200 + $332 Extended Learning Fees

Above fees include tuition, room and daily breakfast, museum entrances, medical insurance, ground transportation to/from airport, transportation to/from all field excursions.  Airfare, meals not listed, and personal expenditures are NOT included in the program cost and are estimated at $2,000.

How to Apply:

  1. Attend an information session by Faculty Leader, Yujiro Shimogori.
  2. Print out the application materials below.  All application materials must be received by Monday, March 28, 2016 along with your non-refundable $300 deposit to the Office of Global Education, Administrative 3200.  Online payment preferred through CashNet:  https://commerce.cashnet.com/CSUSM_STDYABRD Please be advised that all payments aside from those via e-check (you will need to know your checking account number and bank routing number) will accrue a 2.75% convenience fee.  Cash, checks, and money orders made payable to CSUSM will also be accepted.
  3. Final payment of $1,900 is due by Thursday, April 14, 2016 to the Office of Global Education.
  4. A mandatory pre-departure orientations will be held with Dr. Shimogori. Details will follow.
