Dear Prospective Student,
The application period for the Master of Arts in Sociological Practice (MASP) 2018 cohort runs from Oct. 1, 2017 to March 1, 2018. We will not be reviewing applications until after the application period closes. Please note that we require that you have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 to be admitted to the program. In addition, although having a B.A. in Sociology is ideal, a related undergraduate degree in one of the social sciences or in an interdisciplinary field along with some sociology experience, may have also prepared you well for the program. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about fit before applying. (email@example.com, MASP Graduate Coordinator)
If you would like to apply to the MASP program for the Fall 2018 cohort, you will need to do the following.
1/ First, apply to the CSU through their centralized database at https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/graduate. Note that when you fill out the application it will ask you for a statement of purpose. You will be writing a personal statement for your MASP application so you do not have to submit one on the CSU Apply application—you can leave that section blank. Also note that the CSU charges $55 for each graduate program to which you apply. You can see the tips for filling out the CSU Apply Graduate application as an attachment at the bottom of this page. The document should answer most of your questions about this process.
2/ After you have turned in your application to CSU Apply, be on the lookout for an email that will be sent by CSUSM to the email address that you have used on your application. You will receive an email that provides a link to the MASP supplemental application in 3-10 business days (this is the typical time frame but may take longer). Check your clutter folder and your trash folder as well when you are looking for this email—sometimes it will show up there.
3/ After you receive the email with the link, you should click on it and fill out the MASP application. The application requires that you answer questions about your educational history and background questions (see the application questions in the second attachment at the bottom of this page). In addition, you will be asked to provide the names and email addresses for the three people (a minimum of two must be from former or current instructors) who have agreed to write you a letter of recommendation, a writing sample, a statement of purpose, and your unofficial transcripts from all colleges that you have attended. The departmental application process will not be complete until you also send your official transcripts from all colleges you have attended besides CSUSM to Graduate Admissions as well (Office of Admissions, Graduate Admissions, CSUSM, 333 S Twin Oaks Valley Road, San Marcos, CA 92096). You do not need to send an official transcript from CSUSM if you earned or will earn a bachelor’s degree from the university; they already have it on file).
It is important to give yourself plenty of time to fill out the application and to submit it a few weeks before the due date. Please note that the links for the letters of recommendations are sent to your recommenders after you complete the recommendations page (your application does not have to be complete for them to be sent). Be sure to give your recommenders sufficient time to write and upload your letters before March 1st.
