Summer in Paris: Youth in French Society

Program Overview:

Explore the beautiful city of Paris while learning about youth in French society.  Guided by Dr. Darlene Piña, students will have first-hand experiences with French youth culture as well as opportunities to establish international networks in Paris. 

During your time abroad, you will: 

  • Study the social position of youth in French society, both past and present
  • Examine the institutions that socialize and control youth, including government, education, and employment
  • Learn about youth subcultures and immigrant experiences
  • Observe French customs for youth regarding friendship, dating, and family relationships
  • Discover the roles media, pop culture, and technology play in the lives of French youth
  • Analyze youth social movements and political participation

Program Excursions:

  • Attend lectures by local experts on the following topics:  Youth subcultures and immigrant groups in Paris;  Political and social movements organized by French youth; French social, economic, and educational policies affecting youth
  • Attend art exhibits, concerts, and theatre performances featuring French youth
  • Meet with organizations such as the UNESCO Youth Programme
  • Visit local schools and colleges, including La Sorbonne
  • Visit world-famous Paris sites such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Arc de Triomphe, Sainte-Chapelle Cathedral, Champs-Elysées and more
  • Take guided walks through the famous Paris neighborhoods of The Left Bank, The Marais, Medieval Latin Quarter, and Village Montmartre
  • Explore the important museums of Paris, including the Louvre, Orsay Museum, and Pompidou Center
  • Enjoy French cuisine at charming cafés and brasseries, and sample delicious pastries & chocolate at the most popular boulangeries and patisseries
  • Tour parks & gardens, including the famous Luxembourg Garden

Academic Calendar:

 May 28-June 10 (departure from U.S. on May 28 to arrive no later than noon May 29)

Academic Focus:

Sociology (SOC) 317: Youth & Society; Satisfies Upper-Division General Education requirement in the Social Sciences for students with 60 units or more (3 units of UDGE DD credit).

Language of Instruction:

English

Requirements:

  • Class level:  Open to all students. Students seeking Upper Divising GE credit must clear 60 units prior to taking this course.
  • GPA:  2.75 and above; good academic standing prior to departure

Units:

Students who have already taken SOC 317 at Cal State San Marcos will be enrolled in SOC 498C and earn 3 units of elective credit.

Housing:

Shared rooms at the 3-star Citadines Apart’Hotel Didot Montparnasse in Paris.

Estimated Cost:

$2,400* + Extended Learning Fees, estimated at $662 for 3 units

All fees include transportation in country, accommodation, welcome and farewell dinners, all excursions and medical insurance.  Airfare and personal expenditures NOT included in the program cost, estimated at $1,350-$1,500.

*Based upon a program enrollment of 15 students.  Program price will drop to approximately $2,300 for 20 enrolled students.

To Apply:

  1. Attend an information session led by Program Leader, Dr. Darlene Pina.
  2. Print out the application materials below.  All application materials must be received by Wednesday, February 22 along with your non-refundable $300 deposit to the Office of Global Education.  Online payment preferred through CashNet:  https://commerce.cashnet.com/CSUSM_STDYABRD Please be advised that all payments aside from those on debit cards will accrue a 2.75% convenience fee.  Cash, checks, and money orders made payable to CSUSM will also be accepted.
  3. Final payment of $2,100 is due on Monday, April 17 to the Office of Global Education.  Payment of tuition related expenses will be due directly through Extended Learning and follow the payment guidelines set out for Summer Session.  Remaining program fees due to Global Education follow the procedure outlined above.
  4. A mandatory pre-departure orientation will be held Friday, April 21 from 10:30-12 with Professor Pina to discuss arrival instructions and the upcoming course(s).  Some course sessions may take place prior to leaving.  More details will follow.
