Student Specialists  

Student specialists are an essential asset to the daily functions of the Cross-Cultural Center (CCC). They assist professional staff in various areas and the work opportunity provides CSUSM students with professional, academic, and personal development through co-curricular programs. They support the mission of the center to encourage identity exploration and appreciate differences. They assist in creating space for marginalized communities to belong and achieve academic success. They engage in the important work of social justice and make a difference on campus. Typical hiring cycles occur in the Spring semester but occasionally there are openings outside of this timeframe.

All students will be responsible for the following primary duties. Specialized responsibilites may be accessed by selecting the position.

  • Primary Duties
    • Answer phones, greet and respond to visitors, ensure check-in for services
    • Support front desk coverage (in-person/virtual) as well as for events and programs
    • Respond to basic inquiries about programs (email, phone, in-person/virtual)
    • Check and maintain reservation system for library books
    • Provide direction on the process for utilizing supplies and services
    • Ensure spaces are clean and functional
    • Attend meetings, trainings, and personal development workshops
    • Support center related programs and events through attendance or preparatory needs
    • Other related duties as assigned
  • Position Requirements
    • Minimum 2.50 GPA (cumulative and prior term)
    • Currently enrolled student (more than 6.0 units) in good standing at CSUSM
    • Positive attitude & enjoys working on a team
    • Ability to manage projects independently and take initiative remotely
    • Strong interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
    • Ability to speak to groups (workshops and presentations)
    • Maintenance of professional office etiquette in a fast-paced office environment
    • An awareness and appreciation for diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Administrative - Special Projects (1 position)

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Assist in the coordination of the Civility campaign and related events
    • Coordinate the volunteer program including recruitment, selection, and training
    • Actively assess the volunteer group dynamics, personnel issues, and work with administative support coordinator to address opportunities for growth
    • Provide mentorship and direction to volunteers, including, but not limited to customer service, programming, and peer education
    • Assist with maintaining CCC website
  • Communication specialist (1 position)

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Develop a social media plan with deadlines for concepts to increase followers and outreach consistent with current social media trends
    • Assist with management of CCC social media accounts using platforms like Meta Business Suite for postings and any necessary responses to account followers
    • Coordinate with the Graduate Assistant, graphic design specialist, and CCC staff to create and advertise content for upcoming events including educational posts
    • Organize calendar of events for each semester to share with CCC staff and campus partners, where appropriate
    • Create videos with graphic design specialist around social justice topics and issues
  • Graphic Design specialist (1 position)

    Additional Requirement

    • Have knowledge of and use graphic design programs such as the Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and other programs like Canva, when necessary

     

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Use University style/branding guides to communicate the identity of the Center
    • Create marketing materials for events and programs to be used for social media, fliers, A-frames, digital signage, publications, banners, and special projects
    • Coordinate digital signage posts for the center and work with CCC staff outreach to digital signage managers
    • Assist in creation of any assets/copy (e.g. newsletter, social media accounts)
    • Edit photos and videos in preparation for posting on CCC website and/or social media outlets
    • Maintain and adhere to file storage specifications, keeping online file storage sites organized and updated
  • Programs specialist (2 positions)

    Duties/Responsibilities

    • Assist in developing programs with an emphasis on multicultural competency, leadership, advocacy and activism, current issues and social justice
    • Assist in logistics and coordination of programmatic initiatives
    • Compile and assess survey feedback from programs
    • Facilitate and present workshops and trainings on campus
    • Manage participant database (Presence) and coordination of marketing efforts
