Program Outcomes
URISE
During the past 15 years of our MARC, RISE, and URISE programs, scholars have been highly successful. We have had 172 unique individuals enter our programs. 172 (100%) engaged in academic and summer research. 156 (100%) have completed their B.S. degrees (10 are still in the program and 6 were either dismissed or withdrew from the program), and 92 (59%) directly entered a PhD program. To date, of these 92, 53 are still in progress in their PhD programs and 35 have completed their PhD’s. In addition, 42 (27%) have directly entered MS programs, 36 (85%) have completed their master’s and 3 (7%) are in progress. In the past 4 years of our current URISE program, scholars were even more successful indicating that our program is working. During the last 4 years of URISE, we had 30 students complete the program, 30 (100%) graduated with their degree and 25 (83%) went directly on to PhD programs from their bachelor’s degree, and 3 (10%) went on to master’s programs for a total of 28 (93%) attending a biomedical or behavioral sciences graduate program; 10 scholars are in progress, and we recruited 10 outstanding scholars for our fifth cohort.
This past year, scholars made a total of 58 scientific presentations. In addition to several students competing in the CSU Student Research competition, 6 were finalists and 1 TRDRP Scholar was a winner at the CSU Statewide Competition.
Bridges to the Baccalaureate
In the most recent 15 years of the B2B program, 226 of 243 total participants completed the B2B program (93%). Of the 226 students who completed the program, 211 have transferred to 4-yr institutions (93%). This transfer volume is over double the average 6-yr transfer rate and nine times higher than the 3-yr transfer rates at these two campuses (described further below). Once transferred, our B2B alumni have had a 90% retention and completion rate in their bachelor’s program (145 completed, 59 in progress). In addition, the CSUSM B2B alumni have enrolled in or completed master’s programs, PhD programs (38), MD/DO (11) or are employed in research-related positions.
Bridges to the PhD
The Bridges to the Doctorate just started on our campus in 2022, thus we are just starting to see the first students enter PhD programs. Of the first cohort of 5 students, 3 have entered PhD programs, while 2 are applying for the current cycle or entering the workforce.
