Modern Language Studies

Important Message

The senseless  killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and countless other Black lives lost to police brutality, are a sign of a major problem in a system that operates under an ideology that oppresses, dehumanizes, and criminalizes Black bodies.

The MLS Department stands united to learn with, defend and protect our Black community.  We define ourselves as a center for social change, propelling an ongoing exchange of information, knowledge, and ideas through the power of the written and spoken word.

We challenge ourselves in our work, and in our day-to-day lives to dismantle systemic racism and the ideology upon which it is built.

BLACK LIVES MATTER, BLACK LIVES ARE PRECIOUS, BLACK LIVES ARE IRREPLACEABLE.

Language Diversity

In order to help the community understand the culturally diverse nature of our changing society and world, the faculty in the Department of Modern Language Studies currently offer courses in four languages:  Arabic, French, German and Spanish

While we focus on the standard variety of each of these languages, students become familiar with the different linguistic and cultural characteristics of the various regions where the languages are spoken, and we, as faculty, value these differences.  From basic language instruction to advanced graduate courses, we are committed to exposing our students to the multicultural aspects of our global society.  Our commitment to diversity is also represented by the multicultural composition of the faculty.
