Model United Nations

The mission of CSUSM’s Political Science and Global Affairs Department Model United Nations (MUN) Program is to encourage student engagement in the world through learning about the UN system. The UN is an intergovernmental organization that brings 193 Member State governments together to negotiate and reach agreements on addressing the world’s biggest issues, from environmental to developmental to peace building concerns.

In this program students learn the skills of debate, negotiation, and conflict resolution. Students practice diplomacy skills by engaging in a UN simulation in one or more collegiate MUN conferences annually. The months of training and work that goes into preparing for a conference helps students build and enhance their communication, public speaking, negotiation, and leadership skills. Such skills are necessary to help students be competitive on the job market and confront problems that challenge their local communities and world.

The MUN program and experience helps students build the tools to be engaged citizens and responsive community leaders. CSUSM’s MUN program also encourages student involvement in the world though service learning and participation in community activities and events that improve local communities.

The MUN experience makes a meaningful difference in the lives of our students. Attending an MUN Conference with college students from around the world challenges students to engage in constructive debate about world issues, seeking to find collaborative solutions.
