Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Mission

The Department of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at CSUSM is a space for the critical study of the social constructions of the body, gender, and sexuality. Our intersectional and interdisciplinary department focuses on teaching, research, and activism that create a transformative understanding of oppression, privilege, and power relations. We explore the intersectional analyses of gender, sexuality, race/ethnicity, class, religion, disabilities, nationality/immigration status, nonhuman animals and the environment—and other identities—through feminist perspectives in both local and transnational contexts. It is fundamental to our department to foster personal, social, and political accountability and transformation, with the goal of contributing to a more just and inclusive future for all.

"A student recently wrote to me: 'Before your WGSS course I had a servant's heart. I thought it was women’s duty to serve everyone. Not anymore!' This is why I love to teach, and why I encourage everyone to take our courses—they inspire awakenings!"  – Natalie Wilson, PhD, faculty
