Instructions for Letters of Recommendation

McNair candidates are required to submit two letters of recommendation. At least one letter must be from a CSUSM faculty/staff member or a faculty/staff member from another university or college.

  1. Student applicants will be asked to list the Name and Email of their designated letter of recommendations writer in the application form.
  2. Letter writers will be sent an email from CTREE with instructions on submitting their letter of recommendation.

If you will be submitting a letter of recommendation for a student, please be sure to minimally address the following areas in your letter:

  • In what capacity do you know the student
  • How long have you known the student
  • Assessment of student's:
    • Intellectual potential and critical thinking skills
    • Responsibility, reliability, and time‑management
    • Motivation for pursuing advanced study
