CHABSS Additional Employment (AE) and Assigned Time (AT) Request Form

Additional Employment

Additional employment, is defined per the Unit 3 Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and the CSU System-Wide Additional Employment Policy. It is limited to a total of 125%: 100% full-time stateside employment and 25% “Additional Employment”.

The 25% additional employment allowed (an average of 10 hours for week or 3.75 units per semester) is calculated as a percentage of full-time workload (40 hours per week of 15 units) or, when appropriate, time base (.25). It is not calculated as a percentage of full-time salary.

The limitations apply to work performed for any CSU campus and for any CSU auxiliary organization such as CSUSM Corporation, Extended Learning, and grants and contracts administered by CSU auxiliary organizations. Work performed as a Special Consultant is also counted as part of an individual’s total workload.

Work done at another CSU, if done without prior approval and collaboration with your appropriate administrator(s) may result in non-payment. CSUSM requires all additional workload at other CSUs to be paid directly from the hiring campus, unless they have prior written approval from the Dean using the new Additional Employment process.

Note: Additional Employment (within the CSU) is different than Outside Employment (outside the CSU). There are no percentage limits on Outside Employment; however, Outside Employment shall not conflict with normal CSU work assignments or satisfactory performance of all duties as a faculty unit employee.

Assigned Time

Please enter the data of your assigned time from your primary duties. For Tenure Track faculty, this is an reassignment of your 9WTUs of instructional workload to other work on campus. For example, a course release/buyout from a grant, new faculty course release, or serving as a committee chair. Your 6WTUs of Routine Research and Service have already been accounted for and should not be entered here. For Lecturer faculty, examples of assigned time would include receiving a course release/buyout for serving on a campus/college committee.

For additional information see the Faculty Affairs Additional Employment and Assigned Time pages.

Guidlines for Completing the CHABSS AE/AT Request Form

Step 1: Faculty is offered work
Step 2: Faculty completes the AE/AT form

The CHABSS AE/AT form will initiate the college approval process.  Faculty member will need semester/dates, scope of work, funding source, current workload, amount of compensation. These are often found on the offer of work.

Step 3: Approval

Additional Employment – CHABSS Dean’s Office Analyst will review and calculate workload percentage and if workload is available will initiate the Additional Employment Disclosure Form (AEDF) for signature in Adobe Sign.  When faculty receives fully signed copy of the AEDF they are approved to move forward with the work.  If workload is not approved, CHABSS Associate Dean will notify faculty.

Assigned Time – CHABSS Dean’s Office Analyst will review and notify faculty of approval status.

For questions related to AE/AT please contact Associate Dean Elisa Grant Vallone
