About

We Believe Communication and Media Shape Lives.

Every day, communication and media influence how we understand ourselves, connect with others, participate in our communities, and engage with the world. From interpersonal relationships and organizations to journalism, social media, entertainment, politics, and popular culture, communication and media shape the ideas, stories, and experiences that define contemporary life.

At California State University San Marcos, the Department of Communication & Media Studies prepares students to think critically, communicate effectively, and engage thoughtfully with the media-rich world around them. Our students explore how communication and media influence relationships, cultures, organizations, institutions, and communities while developing the knowledge and practical skills to communicate with purpose, creativity, and integrity.

Through innovative teaching, applied learning, research, creative projects, internships, and community engagement, students learn to analyze media, create compelling messages, understand diverse audiences, and use communication to address real-world challenges.

Whether your interests lie in digital media, organizational communication, public relations, journalism, health communication, media criticism, advocacy, social media, or graduate study, our program prepares you to lead, create, and make a meaningful difference in an increasingly connected world.
