4 Semester Timeline (for Full-Time M.A. Students)

Semester

Courses [Units]

Thesis

Fall 1

  • 600 [3 units]
  • 2 additional 5oo- or 600-level courses (possibly 545/513) [6 units]
  • Total: 9 units
  • Begin exploring primary text/s and theoretical perspectives and/or relevant creative genres & models
  • Meet LTWR professors in areas related to your research and/or creative interests—take course or visit in office hours

Spring 1

  • 602A [3 units]
  • 2 additional 500- or 600-level courses (possibly 511 & 601) [6 units]
  • Total: 9 units
  • Make decision about type of thesis: analytical, creative, hybrid, etc.
  • If analytical, choose primary text/s for analysis and theoretical perspective & begin researching critical conversation on primary text/s
  • If creative, choose published models from relevant genres & begin developing related creative writing skills
  • Continue meeting LTWR professors in related areas & developing professional relationships

Summer 1

 
  • Conduct research on thesis primary text/s or on creative genres/models/approaches.  Begin drafting thesis proposal.

Fall 2

  • Option: teach GEW 101B 
  • 602B [3 units]
  • 690C (thesis research with thesis director) [3 units]
  • Total: 6 units
  • Submit draft of thesis proposal to chair of thesis committee in Week 1 of Fall semester. 
  • Revise as needed & circulate to entire committee.  Revise as needed based on committee feedback.
  • Final draft of Thesis Proposal due in Week 5 of Fall semester, to all committee members.
  • Thesis Proposal signatures from 3 committee members and graduate director due in Week 7 of Fall semester.
  • Continue research for thesis and begin writing thesis chapter/s.

Spring 2

  • Option: teach GEW 101B
  • 699 (ONLY if defending thesis!) or 690C (if not defending) [3 units]
  • 1 500- or 600-level course (511/601 if not taken already) [3 units]
  • Total: 6 units
  • Submit drafts of chapters to thesis chair for feedback.  Revise based on chair’s feedback.
  • Provide copy of final draft of thesis to committee at least one month before anticipated defense.
  • When chair & committee agree, schedule thesis defense. 
  • Submit final draft of thesis to library.
