Richard Kadrey’s Sandman Slim - What's your favorite book to teach?
Chris Abani’s Virgin of Flames
- Do you have a favorite film?
The Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man.
- How do you spend your free time?
Hiking! My favorites are Joshua Tree, Anza, Big Sur, Sequoia, King’s Canyon. I also really enjoy rock climbing and playing my bass guitar – both of which I do pretty poorly!
- What is your biggest literary inspiration?
Don DeLillo – he writes novels like a poet and effortlessly blends popular culture with high art. His depictions of city landscapes are incredible, especially in his masterpiece, Underworld.
- What's your cure for writer's block?
A change of scenery – anywhere, even if just for a few hours; though I would prefer a couple nights in Joshua Tree.
- What are you working on outside of class?
I’m currently writing about the Gothic “underground” depicted in Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy. I am also working on a long-term project about the experience of time in literature. - Fun Fact:
My favorite album is The Black Angel's, Phosphene Dream
