J.R. Rice is a Black man, writer, teacher, event host & curator, and spoken word artist, born and raised in Oakland, California. He has a B.A in Creative Writing and an English Education teaching credential from California State University of Long Beach. While studying abroad in Greece, he was mentored by the author, George Crane. His novel, Broken Pencils earned the 2024 Literary Titan Gold Book Award, 2024 Pencraft Summer Best Book Award winner for Young Adult Coming of Age Fiction, and the 2024 Hawthorne Prize Finalist for Best Fiction. His poetry collection, I WAS, AM, WILL BE was a Semi-Finalist for the 2023 St. Lawrence Book Award from Black Lawrence Press. In addition to his writing accolades, he earned the Rookie of the Year award at the 2005 National Collegiate Poetry Slam in Philadelphia. He was a Semi-Finalist in the 2023 Berkeley Poetry Slam Finals. He was one of the judges for the 2025 Oakland Youth Poet Laureate. He is one of the organizing committee members of the 2026 Beast Crawl Literary Festival in Oakland. He currently hosts and curates the Get-Hype Open-Mic biweekly series in West Oakland. Camarada presents "A World of Sound"

Experience a vibrant journey through Latin American, American, and Spanish music performed by mixed ensembles featuring flute, violin, cello, piano, and harp. Each combination offers a delightful exploration of color and texture—showcasing the expressive possibilities of these instruments together.
Three-time GRAMMY Award–nominated composer Miguel del Aguila will join the ensemble to discuss his captivating work Submerged for flute, violin, cello, and harp, and share insights into his unique compositional approach, deeply rooted in the sounds and rhythms of his native Uruguay.
