I’ve been at CSUSM for almost a year now. I’m into music production and performance but I got back into painting after a 10 + year hiatus. I found my way back to art when an old roommate was about to throw out some canvases he painted with an ex-girlfriend at a “Sip and Paint” event. I decided I could reuse the canvases and ended up painting over them.

Fun fact: this is my first art exhibit.

Another fun fact: all my artwork is made with recycled materials (i.e. paints were donated, canvases were recycled).

Artwork by Baruc Castillo

"A"
Art Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

An explosive abstract piece painted on recycled canvas. I began working on this piece during the pandemic by just throwing paint onto the canvas. It has evolved throughout the process, but I kept using green, red, and yellow as primary colors because I wanted the piece to be bright and stand out.

"B"
Art Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Natural flowing abstract painted on recycled canvas. Originally it was a bright colored jellyfish. Now it has mostly cool colors like blue, green, and purple but with gold lines to accent certain curves. The process included me nearly ruining the piece after 4 stages of painting.

"C"
Art Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

This is a chaotic abstract piece. I painted over an old canvas about 6 times before realizing the direction of the artwork. In a way, it's inspired by confusion, uncertainty, and insecure thoughts I was thinking at the time.

"D"
Art Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

This is a free-flowing abstract piece where I dropped paint on the canvas directly. Yellow was used as the primary color mixed with a variety of blue, green, orange, and purple.

"E"
Art Medium: Acrylic on Canvas

Repurposed and recycled abstract piece decorated with shades of red, green, and blue. The brush strokes all have a circular theme to catch the eye.
