Tatiana Sizonenko
Faculty Bio
Dr. Tatiana Sizonenko is an art historian and curator. She received her Ph.D. in Renaissance
Art History, with a specialization in Venice and the Mediterranean world, from the
Visual Arts Department at UC San Diego. Her current book project, “The Myth of Roman Imperium Outside of Italy: Constructing Rulership in the Eastern
Mediterranean 1450-1550,” examines artistic ties between Venice and the Crimean Khanate and Muscovy at the beginning
of the sixteenth century in the context of diplomacy and politics in the Mediterranean.
Dr. Sizonenko has contributed essays to exhibitions of Russian Medieval art at the
State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, to California Italian Studies, and to a forthcoming
volume on portable architecture and artistic exchange edited by Dr. Alina Payne. She
has been the recipient of several fellowships including the Getty Foundation’s Connecting Art Histories Fellowship, the Timken Museum of Art Fellowship, the Dean
of Art and Humanities Dissertation Research Fellowship from UCSD. Currently, she teaches
at CSU San Marcos Pre-20th Century Art History and Contemporary Artists. In both university
and museum settings, Dr. Sizonenko has taught courses on global art from ancient to
contemporary periods with a strong focus on the intended function of art objects in
their historical settings and cultural contexts
