Come and interact with members of the Black Student Union and learn about inspirational African American trailblazers both in the past and present. Support by wearing your green Civility T-shirt or earn one by participating at the event.

Kinks and Curls Galore! Natural Hair and Fashion Show

"Good hair" is often viewed as long, straight and not the texture most African Americans possess. Join the Black Student Union as they host a natural hair show to display and embrace the various types of hair of African Americans and other descendants of Africa. It will be an eventful gathering featuring hair models from all over San Diego County as we discuss self-acceptance, self-appreciation and beauty from the roots.

The Harlem Renaissance Relived CANCELLED

A cultural center during the 1920s, Harlem was the epicenter for Black writers, artists, musicians, poets, and scholars. Join the Black Student Union as they recreate the sights and sounds of this significant time in Black history. This exhibit will showcase the revival of a culture through black films, plays, poetry, music, and art that not only uplifted a culture but influenced the world.

Black History Month Festival: Still We Rise!

A celebration of black culture through the works of Dr. Maya Angelou and other pioneers that paved the way for today's African American people to "still rise" against all obstacles that society may bring. Black History Month Movie Night - Special Screening of "Selma"

Not All Black Girls Know How to Eat - A Story of Bulimia

in partnership with Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) for observance of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week and Black History Month, Stephanie Covington-Armstrong, author of "Not All Black Girls Know How To Eat - A Story of Bulimia," talks about her struggle as a black woman with bulimia and takes a unique perspective on a disease that is consistently portrayed as a white woman's issue. She reveals cultural and psychological factors that contributed to her eating disorder, and answers questions about why black women often do not seek therapy for emotional, disordered eating. Covington-Armstrong brings important awareness of minorities with eating disorders; and connects to the social justice issues related to early detection, intervention, treatment and recovery. Co-sponsored by the Cross-Cultural Center.
