Service Learning & Internships

Need to do a service learning or internship for a class this semester?  Here is a list of some potential projects.  Also, if you have an idea, the sustainability manager is open to hearing it and working to make it happen. 

Service Learning 

Projects up to 25 hours for credit.

Internships 

Projects up to 120 hours for credit or non-credit. Internship opportunities are listed below, but student can create their own sustainability based project as well. 

Current Internship Opportunities

  • Sustainable Labs

    Intern will work to develop promotional documents and information on the importance of lab efficiency and help distribute the material throughout the appropriate buildings and departments.

    Responsibilities:

    • Work with Instructional Support Technician (ITS) to
      ensure lab equipment is in power saving modes or
      unplugged when possible.
    • Build relationships with other campus communities that have green labs programs.
    • Work with safety specialist to develop green lab program such as a Shut the Sash Program. 

    Qualifications:

    • Internship can be for credit or non-credit.
    • Interested in sustainability and 'Green Labs Program'.
    • Open to any major, preferred a physical science major.
    • 2-5 hours required per week.
    • Works with Safety Specialist and IST. 
  • Sustainable Housing

    Students who live in on-campus housing impact our
    sustainability efforts significantly. The student will work with housing to create programming that focuses on how to make dorm life more sustainable. 

    Responsibilities/Duties:

    • Design, implement, and monitor educational
      campaigns and programs.
    • Create promotional materials to educate residents with our sustainability efforts.
    • Establish and maintain a green room certification
      program 

    Qualifications:

    • Internship can be for credit or non-credit.
    • Interest in waste reduction and recycling.
    • Open to any major.
    • 2-5 hours required per week
    • Reports to sustainability manager / residential
      education
  • Procurement & Sustainabilty

    CSUSM purchases a lot of stuff, either for instructional or operational reasons. This intern will work to help us meet our Purchasing goals within the Sustainability Master Plan. They will work closely with our Procurement Office and the Sustainability Program.

    Responsibilities:

    • Research environmentally preferred purchasing guidelines.
    • Review current Staples purchases to ensure autosubstitution is working. 
    • Review other campus efforts and what we can replicate at CSUSM.

    Qualifications:

    • Internship can be for credit or non-credit.
      Interested in sustainable business practices. 
    • Open to any major, preferable a business major.
    • 2-5 hours required per week.
    • Reports to sustainability manager. 
  • Waste Minimization

    Intern will research and implement ways to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, which will help CSUSM reach the goal of zero waste by 2025. Working closely with the social media intern, this intern will make creative and innovative advertising campaigns. Intern will work closely with the sustainability manager and the office of Energy Management and Utility Services.

    Responsibilities/Duties:

    • Develop outreach tools to engage students, staff and faculty
    • Take data and develop creative ideas related to the collection and elimination of waste
    • Research sustainability and waste initiatives on other campus that CSUSM can implement
    • Conduct audits, surveys and assessments on waste in classrooms and around campus

    Qualifications:

    • Internship can be for credit or non-credit.
    • Interested in helping meet sustainability goals.
    • Open to any major.
    • 2-5 hours required per week.
    • Reports to recycling coordinator and sustainability manager. 
  • Social Media and Sustainability

    Are you interested in building your social media portfolio for career opportunities? Work to develop sustainability  campaigns via social media platforms and help our campus community become more sustainable through easy actions and efforts.

    Responsibilities/Duties:

    • Create sustainability based campaigns via
      videos/photo contests to engage students.
    • Market sustainability throughout campus.  
    • Assist other interns in promoting sustainability.
    • Update social media platform.

    Qualifications:

    • Internship can be for credit or non-credit.
    • Interest in sustainability & social media.
    • Open to any major, preferably a communications/visual arts major.
    • Knowledge in Adobe software. 
    • 2-5 hours required per week.
    • Reports to sustainability manager
