- Meet the Director of Service Learning and Civic Engagement at CSUSM
As the Director for Service Learning and Civic Engagement, Rochelle Smarr, oversees a portfolio of programs that connect students’ academic interests with community service projects to deepen their learning about social concerns to foster active citizenship in the community. Rochelle leverages her experience as a community organizer to facilitate reciprocal campus-community partnerships that foster student knowledge and meet community organization needs. Nationally, Rochelle is a member of the Board of Directors for the International Association for Research on Service Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE) and a member of the Research Collaborative of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU). Locally, she is a member of the San Diego chapter of the League of Women Voters (LWV-SD), and the North County African American Women’s Association (NCAAWA).
She earned her BA in English from San Jose State and MA in Educational Leadership, Politics, and Advocacy from New York University, both with honors. Currently, she is an educational doctoral candidate at University of California, San Diego and California State University San Marcos. She is the recipient of the 2022 LEAD California Richard E. Cone Award for Emerging Leaders in Community Engagement.
