Construction
- When will construction start?
Construction is set to kick off on December 19, 2023. Here's a breakdown of the timeline:
-December 19, 2023: Construction fencing will be set up.
-January 2024: Salvage operations, site studies, and hard demolition will commence.
-January 2024 to May 2024: Initial construction phase begins with a focus on infrastructure and site improvements.
-July 2024: Above ground construction begins.
-July 2026: Construction is expected to be complete.
- When will the project be complete?Fall 2026. Construction is expected to last approximately 2.5 years.
- When will the new building open to students?This new building is expected to open in Fall 2026.
- When will Parking Lot O close?Parking Lot O will close Saturday, December 16, 2023.
- How will the university mitigate construction noise?To mitigate construction noise, we have scheduled construction activities during normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.), and night work is not currently anticipated. Additionally, our construction teams will adhere to noise reduction practices and regulations to minimize potential disruptions to the campus community.
- How will traffic be impacted during construction?The development of the new facility will impact Campus Way, Campus View Drive and the access road to Parking Lot O. Expect traffic and delays on Campus Way and Campus View Drive due to infrastructure and utility routing. During business hours, a portion of the westbound right lane on Campus View Drive will be closed for a crane hoisting lane. Access to Parking Lot O will be temporarily closed for the campus community.
- How is this project being funded?This project is partially funded by nearly $91 million in funding from the State of California.
- How will I access the UVA during construction?During the initial phase of infrastructure and site improvements, access to UVA will be available through the pedestrian gate near Building D. Approximately six weeks after the start of construction, there will be a new sidewalk from Campus Way to Building B.
- What is the ADA access during construction?We are actively researching the best options to maintain ADA access during construction. We will ensure that ADA access is provided. The safety and accessibility of all campus members remain a top priority.
- Is there a quiet place to study during construction?Housing and Residential Life staff is in the process of identifying some quiet study locations and will post them in the UVA and website before the start of the spring semester.
- How will we move in and out of the UVA?The Housing and Residential Life team are developing a plan for the end of the academic year and the 24-25 academic year. More information will be shared in the spring semester as we are closer to move-out. If you are moving out, prior to that date residents should make arrangements with housing.
Housing
- What is the new University Village Housing and Dining project?
The new University Village Housing and Dining project is an exciting development that comprises a seven-story, 127,000 square-foot affordable housing facility. Within this facility, there will be a total of 555 beds, including 390 classified as affordable, 150 standard beds, and 15 resident advisor beds. This project aims to address the growing housing needs of our student body.
In addition, a 10,000-square-foot dining facility is part of the project. This dining facility will not only provide meals for residents but also serve the broader community. It will offer seating for up to 210 people indoors and an additional 110 outdoors. This project represents a significant step in enhancing both housing and dining options on our campus.
- Who qualifies for affordable housing?Costs will be determined once construction nears completion.
- What will be the cost for affordable housing beds?The cost and qualifications for the affordable housing units will be released in the end of the Fall 2025 semester.
- What will be the cost for standard beds?The rates for the units will be released in the end of the Fall 2025 semester.
- How much is the meal program?The meal plan rates for the new building will be released in the end of the Fall 2025 semester. Please visit dining services for current rates and plans.
- How do I sign up for housing at UVHD?The application for the units will be released in the end of the Fall 2025 semester/early spring 2026.

Parking
- Where can I park during construction?The nearest parking options to Housing during construction will include PS1, Lot N, and Lot K.
- Will Lot O return?Lot O will not return in its previous form.
- Where is overnight parking on campus?You can park overnight in all campus parking lots except Lot L, specific special event areas in Lot F and B, and PS2.
- Can I park overnight in PS2?Starting Monday, December 4, 2023, overnight parking will be permitted on the 6th level ONLY of PS2. It will operate on first-come, first-served basis. If the 6th level of PS2 is full, please consider parking in PS1, Lot N, or Lot K. Overnight parking will NOT be allowed on lower levels of PS2.
- Is parking being added as part of UVHD construction?While some parking will be added as part of the UVHD project, it will be limited to disabled, reserved, and time-limited spaces.
