Our Commitment to Safety and Prevention

Safety FAQs for September 2026 On-Campus Incidents

We recognize that recent reports of sexual assault in campus housing have been difficult and concerning for our community. The recent incidents occurred independently by people known to the victims and are not related.

CSUSM is committed to doing everything we can to prevent it and strengthen safety on our campus. While sexual violence is a concern on college campuses nationwide, sexual violence is never acceptable, and the person who experiences sexual violence is never to blame.  Our university community is coming together to implement additional security measures and build on the prevention, education and support measures already in place.

Our goal is to ensure CSUSM is a place where every student can learn, live and belong with a sense of safety and support. We are taking immediate and ongoing steps to strengthen safety in our residential communities, including but not limited to:

  • Increased University Police patrols in and around residential areas.
  • Additional overnight security has been hired for residential areas.
  • Increased education and awareness for residential students focused on prevention, consent, bystander intervention, safety planning, alcohol education, and available resources. View full list of education and awareness events
  • Establishing 24-hour staffing at front desks to require guest registration in North Commons and Black Oak Hall residential communities.
  • Restricting exterior doors at North Commons and Black Oak Hall to exit-only other than main entrance. All communities already require access card or keys to the gates, building entrance, and apartment/bedroom doors.
  • Expanded staffing including a deputy Title IX coordinator in Housing, Housing community director on call, director of prevention in education in Title IX.

We also encourage all students, faculty and staff to download Cougar Safe, CSUSM's official public safety app. You can download with the Cougar Safe app on Apple App Store for iPhone or Cougar Safe app on Google Play Store. Cougar Safe provides important safety alerts and immediate access to emergency support and campus safety resources.

The app also includes a mobile blue light feature that allows users to quickly contact University Police and share their location when assistance is needed.

Training and Education Resources

Our commitment to providing a safe environment free from sexual violence and harassment begins with prevention. CSUSM offers a variety of innovative initiatives to educate and build awareness on complex issues of stalking, dating violence, domestic violence, sexual harassment, sexual assault and rape.

We provide training and education to students, faculty, and staff on how they can prevent sexual violence and promote bystander intervention. It is our shared responsibility to foster a campus community free of sexual violence.
