Battery Recycling

In California, batteries are a special type of hazardous waste called Universal Waste. As such, they cannot be disposed of in the trash and must be managed in accordance with state and local regulations.

Please deposit spent batteries in one of our designated containers across campus (locations listed below). SH&S routinely checks these containers and will collect the batteries for recycling. DO NOT deposit batteries that are generated off campus (e.g., from home) or send batteries through intra-campus mail.

Lithium Batteries
All lithium (Li-ion) batteries must have the terminal ends covered with clear tape. A roll of clear tape and pair of scissors should be available next to each battery recycling container. If the scissors or tape need to be replaced, please contact SH&S at 760-750-4502 or shs@csusm.edu.

If a container is full, please submit a Hazardous Waste Pick-Up Request.
