Field Research - Safety & Operational Planning

This site is hosted by SH&S and is a collaboration of campus departments that provide services for funded and unfunded field research.

The information here is intended to be a starting point for providing tools and guidance for specialized research including: training, operational risk management and safety considerations, equipment, and supplies.  

Scope: To provide support and consultation to faculty, staff, and students whose research may have a field work component externally or internally to campus.

National Science Foundation (NSF)- Funded Research

NSF’s Safe and Inclusive Off-Campus Workplace Environments requires that principal investigators share a plan for a safe and inclusive environment to anyone who will participate in off-site research and how following behavior will be addressed: 

  1. Abuse of any person, including, but not limited to, harassment, stalking, bullying, or hazing of any kind, whether the behavior is carried out verbally, physically, electronically, or in written form; or 
  2. Conduct that is unwelcome, offensive, indecent, obscene, or disorderly.
