Who's on the Ballot?

President Candidates

JULIA GLORIOSOjulia

Hi Cougars! My name is Julia Glorioso and I am a third-year political science major with a double minor in geography and border studies. I am a first-generation college student who is especially passionate about giving back to the campus community. I have been part of Associated Students Inc. (ASI) since my first year at CSUSM. My first year I started as a volunteer doing advocacy work on ASI's volunteer team, Lobby Corps. In my second year, I began my first elected position as the College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral, and Social Sciences (CHABSS) Representative. This year, I currently serve on the executive team as the Vice President of Student & University Affairs where I work on higher education policy and advocacy. Throughout my time with ASI, I have been committed to hearing and representing the voice of the student body, whether that be advocating at the campus level with our administration or at the systemwide level with the Cal State Student Association. During my time as an elected representative, I have engaged students in registering to vote, served on campus-wide committees, empowered students voices by pushing for increased mental health access, and much more. As ASI President, I would be committed to serving, engaging, and empowering students as I have done throughout my past three years with ASI. A few of my priorities as President would be to advocate for mental health, increase awareness and access to student resources, and re-engage students in campus events and initiatives. I will additionally focus on environmental sustainability, student safety, and the overall holistic wellbeing of CSUSM students.

  • 1. Why do you want to run for ASI President?
I want to run for ASI President because I am passionate about representing the student body and amplifying student voices. Ensuring both that CSUSM students have the best college experience possible and that proper representation exists for student issues are goals I will bring to the position. I believe that as President I will be able to effectively lead the ASI organization and create a dedicated and passionate team that works for the betterment of the student body. My extensive involvement with ASI would allow for a smooth transition into the role of President, and I would be able to start straight away on my goals and priorities for the next academic year.
  • 2. What qualities and experiences do you have that will make you effectively serve, engage, and empower CSUSM students?
I have been involved with ASI since my first year at CSUSM in various roles. I started out as an ASI volunteer on Lobby Corps, where I advocated for CSU and CSUSM students with state legislators at the capitol in Sacramento. In my second year, I was a College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral, and Social Sciences (CHABSS) Representative. I advocated on behalf of CHABSS students by sitting on university-wide committees, hosting events, and creating initiatives for the school. This year, I am a part of the executive team as the Vice President of Student & University Affairs, where I civically engage students through events and initiatives and lead higher education advocacy efforts. Through my years with ASI I have been a strong advocate for increasing mental health resources, addressing food insecurity, prioritizing student safety and wellbeing, and representing the student voice. I would continue to be an advocate for the student body and prioritize serving, engaging, and empowering students as ASI President.
  • 3. Based on your experiences as a student, what do you hope to accomplish if elected?

I will focus on highlighting the resources available to students not only in ASI, but across campus if elected. Many student resources go underutilized because students were not made aware of them. As ASI President, I will work to connect students to the available resources and increase their accessibility, so students will get the best out of their college experience. The mental health of CSUSM students is paramount to student success, so I will also continue to push for increased access to mental health resources, building off of my previous work passing a Resolution to Expand Mental Health Resources for CSUSM. Lastly, working to re-engage students in campus life will be a core concern of mine as many are still transitioning back to campus after being virtual for the pandemic. I will work to put on events to engage students with campus life, fostering the full CSUSM experience.

Vice President of Student and University Affairs Candidates

ERNEST CISNEROS

ernestI'm a Social Sciences major with a primary focus on History and secondary fields in Political Science and Communication. I feel that I've embraced ASI's mission to serve, engage, and empower our CSUSM students during my time as College of Humanities, Arts, Behavioral & Social Sciences(CHABSS) Representative in the 2021-22 academic year; I've had the opportunity to serve on diverse university and ASI committees that directly impact and effect our students, such as the Student Health Advisory Council, which I chaired, where students and staff make recommendations to our SHCS on better ways to serve our students mental and physical health. I also had the opportunity to sit on search committees for high value positions within our university to ensure that student voice was represented in the decisions to bring new leaders to our campus. In addition to the various committees, I've continued to serve and engage students by leading the ASI Student Art Exhibition where students are encouraged to submit pieces of their own art to display in the USU. I've also had the wonderful pleasure of putting together the CHABSS Student Organization Council which will serve as a resource to our CHABSS affiliated student organizations and its members to increase student engagement and grow student organizations. I believe I can continue to engage, empower, and serve our students as VP of Student and University Affairs. I want to work with our students who are passionate about higher education advocacy and the legislative process to grow our advocacy efforts at CSUSM; student voices matter and we need to make our voices heard so that decisions can be made on our behalf. I also want to work with our university administration to ensure that student needs and concerns are continued to be heard and address as best as possible. We as a campus community are coming off a tough two years of primarily virtual instruction so we have a unique opportunity to rebuild our community together, so I believe we need to give our students even more opportunities to share concerns or ideas, to be heard and represented.

  • 2. What qualities and experiences do you have that will make you effectively serve, engage, and empower CSUSM students?
I pride myself on working hard for others; when I commit myself to doing something, I do whatever it takes to get it done. I believe in serving others and working towards the greater good and I see those same qualities from our university which is why I’m committed to working hard for our students. I believe I’m an effective communicator which will help improve and encourage communication between campus entities, the ASI team, and our students to better engage and listen.
  • 3. Based on your experiences as a student, what do you hope to accomplish if elected?

If elected, I’d like to continue the great work that is starting and happening on our campus and in ASI. We need to continue to strive to improve communication between all our campus entities to students; continue improving the student life experience as a whole. Our university community is returning to our beautiful campus after almost 2 years, like our sister CSU campuses. I want to help bring CSUSM to the forefront of the CSU’s for our civic engagement as a whole and on our campus, this includes advocacy at the legislative level to bring more funding and resources for our students and ensuring that the college experience is affordable for all.

College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (CSTEM) Representative Candidates

STEPHANIA REY

stephaniaHi my name is Stephania Rey. I am a senior and Software Engineering major. I am running for this ASI position, because since day one at CSUSM I have been actively helping my fellow students to get more access to resources and in aiding them for transiting to a full time job after finishing their college career. I have been an active student advocate working with the local community colleges and community in assisting their students to have a smooth transition to a major university like CSUSM and having equal opportunity to engage in hands-on projects and networking opportunities. As any active student club leader, member on campus, and former ASI CSTEM representative, I have been working hard with my team members to ensure that our students have equal access to resources, workshops, and extra curricular activities that can assist them in their education path and success. I hope this experience is taken into account to vote for me so I can contribute more in this position for all of you.

  • 1. Why do you want to run for CSTEM Representative?

I want to have a stronger representation for all CSTEM students. We have a very supportive university but there is still room for improvement. I would like to bring my experience of over 2 years working with students  and staff to improve our curriculum, and increase opportunities for the students to get access to better resources before they graduate and start looking for a job.

  • 2. What qualities and experiences do you have that will make you effectively serve, engage, and empower CSUSM students?
Hardworking, resourceful, well connected. I have experience over 3 years working with different  clubs, student bodies, and external institutions both in the government and the private sector that can be very beneficial to our students.
  • 3. Based on your experiences as a student, what do you hope to accomplish if elected?

I would like to make more class sections available to all Science, Math, CS, and Engineering majors so that they can accelerate their career. I also would like to have tuition and fees that are paid by the students to be spent in ways that can benefit they such as student run projects, start up ideas and collaboration with local companies, hiring outside professionals from the industry to training our students to learn hands on skills that are valued and are in demand in the job market that are not offered currently at school, events, networking opportunities and real world experience in the industry. I want to help create new scholarships and sources of funding. Revise and utilize a new funding system. Lastly, I am currently working externally to make those opportunities available not only for CSTEM students but to all of our students.
