Learn to design, build and manage databases using relational models and SQL. You’ll work with key concepts like ER diagrams, normalization, data security and get a foundation in NoSQL databases.   

Computer System Analysis and Design

Gain experience with the systems development life cycle and compare traditional and emerging approaches to building information systems. Develop skills in modeling processes, designing interfaces and conducting feasibility and cost-benefit analyses.

    Degree-completion programs at CSUSM cater to individuals who have initiated, yet not completed, their four-year undergraduate degrees. If you have earned at least 60 transferable units, you are eligible for this coveted BS in Computer Information Systems from Cal State San Marcos.  

  • What is a cohort?

    Students in the computer information systems bachelor’s program progress through the curriculum as a unified group in Chula Vista, fostering collaboration and professional networking opportunities. This cohort model ensures consistent peer support throughout the 60-unit program. 

  • Is there an online option for this program?

    No. This program is designed to be face-to-face at CSUSM at Chula Vista, and you must be prepared to take all classes on campus. In-person collaboration with your instructors and peers enhances the CIS learning experience. 

  • What is the 2 + 2 Computer Information Systems program?

    The 2 + 2 CIS program is a partnership between Southwestern College (SWC) in South County San Diego and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM). You’ll start by completing your lower-division courses at SWC (the “2”), then transfer to CSUSM at Chula Vista for the upper-division courses required for the BS in Computer Information Systems (the “+2”). This pathway allows you to seamlessly transition between both institutions and complete your bachelor’s degree efficiently. 

     

  • Where will classes be held for this program?

    All BS in CIS classes will be held in person on the Southwestern College campus in Chula Vista at 900 Otay Lakes Road, 91910.

  • How do I apply for CPL?

    Start by contacting your CSUSM advisor, who will guide you through the CPL process. You’ll need to provide proof of your certifications and/or provide supporting documentation demonstrating your learning, knowledge or skill acquired through experience. Once the appropriate paperwork has been received, the department faculty will assess which credits you qualify for. 

  • Can other forms of experience besides certifications count toward CPL?
    Yes, beyond certifications, prior experience such as work or military experience may also qualify for credit. Faculty at CSUSM will review these experiences on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility.
