Financial Aid

Consideration for summer assistance applies to regularly matriculated students (students who have been admitted as regular students to CSUSM) and who are enrolled in courses for degree credit.  Current financial aid recipients who are enrolled in summer courses and who appear to have remaining Pell Grant or loan eligibility for summer will be notified by the Financial Aid & Scholarships Office prior to the summer payment deadline.  A separate application is not required for summer.  Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six undergraduate units or five units of graduate level courses to be considered for student loans funds.

Financial aid for summer is available for students who were financial aid recipients during the preceding Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 semesters.  To be considered for summer financial aid a student must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be enrolled as a matriculated student in a degree program.
  • If eligible for a Pell Grant during Fall 2022 or Spring 2023 at CSUSM, the student must have remaining Pell Grant eligibility for summer.  Remaining Pell Grant eligibility would be available only if the student had not received a full-time Pell Grant payment for both the fall and spring semesters.  For financial aid purposes, summer is considered the end of the award year for 22-23 and eligibility is based on any remaining eligibility that was not used during the preceding fall or spring terms.
  • A student may have remaining Direct Student Loan eligibility for summer if they had not borrowed the full annual loan limit based on their academic class level (Freshman, Sophomore, etc.).  Undergraduates and Teacher Credential candidates must be enrolled in a minimum of six units to be considered for any loan funds.  Graduate students must be enrolled in a minimum of five units of graduate level courses to be considered for loan assistance.

Financial Aid Notifications

Students who are enrolled and determined eligible for summer financial aid will be notified via e-mail at their CSUSM e-mail address.  Students will be notified of any remaining loan eligibility only if enrolled in a minimum of six units if an undergraduate or five units if a graduate student. Notifications will be sent on a rolling basis beginning in May.

Financial Aid Payments

Financial aid funds are first applied to the student account to pay for Tuition and Registration Fees.  Financial aid awards do not pay user fees, such as parking fees, late fees, or fines.  Students receiving student loan funds must be enrolled in a minimum of six units during the summer session to be eligible for a loan disbursement. Dates of disbursement and eligibility requirements are available on the financial aid website: www.csusm.edu/finaid/.
