Student Opener Competition

Looking for a chance to showcase your musical skills? Interested in competing for a chance to open our annual music festival? Want to know who is playing at Festival 78? Then you are at the right place!

The ASI Student Opener Competition is a friendly competition where students compete for a chance to perform at Festival 78. The winner(s) will be chosen based off of student votes. Winner(s) will open for the headlining act(s) and have the opportunity to be showcased using the same production items as the Festival 78 headliners!

  • Applicant Requirements
    • At least 1 member of the performing group must be a current, CSUSM student
    • Must be available the day of Festival 78 
    • Must provide technical rider. ASI will work to accomodate tech needs within budget.
    • Must provide music sample as part of application by e-mailing a link, video, etc. 
  • Applicant Guidelines
    •  Student(s) who competed last year and DID NOT win can apply and compete again
    • Student(s) who won last year can perform for Student Opener Competition, but CANNOT compete and win again
    • If you are in a band, at least ONE member of the group needs to be a CURRENT CSUSM student with an existing GPA with the campus
    • Any application whose music is: derogatory, encouraging mosh pits, encouraging of items being thrown, not aligned with our Viewpoint Neutrality policy will not be considered to compete
    • Must have AT LEAST 15 minutes worth of music
