We kindly ask that you do not reach out with questions regarding course equivalencies
or requesting pre-admission advising. Due to the number of inquiries that we receive, we are unable to review students
for eligibility without an application. Thank you for understanding.
Admission: General Information
- What are the requirements for ABSN?
The minimum requirements for ABSN include:
- Bachelor's degree
- 2.5 GPA in last 60 semester units/90 quarter units
- 71% on TEAS exam (version 7)
- 2.75 in pre-nursing core
- Completion of all pre-nursing core:

- How are admission decisions made?
We use a points system. Learn about our point breakdown
Factors outside of the criteria listed on the points breakdown document (last 60 GPA, pre-nursing core GPA, and TEAS score) are not considered.
- How can I confirm that my courses will be accepted?
Due to the number of inquiries and applications that we receive, we are unable to conduct pre-evaluations. Students must apply in order to be reviewed for eligibility.
We kindly ask that you do not send inquiries regarding course approval/equivalencies, we only review courses when reviewing applicants for eligibility.
We encourage students to self-assess by using the following resources:
- Do courses/prerequisites expire?No. Courses/pre-requisites do not expire. We don’t have a recency requirement.
- Can I apply if my prerequisites are in progress?No. To be fully considered for admission, all requirements must be met by the deadline, no exceptions. The deadlines are for the application, transcripts, grades for prerequisites, and TEAS. All available terms and deadlines are posted on our website
- Can I apply if my degree is in progress?Students can apply with their degree in progress as long as all minimum requirements are met and they can show proof of their degree prior to starting the program.
- Do you accept online courses and labs?Yes, we accept online courses and labs. Courses must be; completed at a regionally accredited institution, CSU transferable and meet course content requirements.
- Do my pre-nursing core requirements need to be completed at the same institution?No. We will accept courses if they are completed at different institutions, as long as they meet our criteria. All courses must be; completed at a regionally accredited institution, be CSU transferable and meet course content requirements.
- Does the length of the pre-nursing core requirement matter?No, however, it does need to come from a regionally accredited institution and be CSU transferable and meet course content requirements.
- Do the units matter for the pre-nursing core requirement?No, however, it does need to come from a regionally accredited institution, CSU transferable and meet course content requirements.
- I don’t have a bachelor’s degree, can I apply to the ABSN program?No. This is a second bachelor's degree. Veterans can apply to the VBSN program without a bachelor’s degree. Students can apply with their degree in progress as long as they can show proof of their degree prior to starting the program.
- I have completed college coursework or a degree outside of the United States. How
will I know which of these credits will be accepted at CSUSM?
You will need to have your coursework evaluated by an independent evaluation company. You must use a CSUSM approved foreign transcript evaluation agency. You may choose any evaluation company on this list. Once you receive the official evaluation, please send a photocopy of the evaluation to:

- How competitive is the program?
We admit the top 60 students with the highest points each term. We receive about 200 applications each term. We admit three times a year (Fall, Spring, and Summer).
- I want to have my courses reviewed prior to applying, how can I meet with an Academic
Advisor?
Due to the number of inquiries and applications that we receive, we are unable to offer pre-admission advising. Students must apply in order to be reviewed for eligibility.

- I have nursing/volunteer experience, will that increase my chances of being admitted?
No. We make decisions just based on points. No exceptions.

- I repeated courses, which grades will be used?We will use the best attempt taken/highest grade.
- I have several courses that meet the same requirement, which courses will be used?If several courses meet the criteria for the same requirement, we will use the best attempt taken/highest grade.
- Do you accept “P”/“CR” grade for pre-nursing core?Yes, if the “P”/“CR” equals a “C” or better. If the “P”/“CR” grade equals a “C-”, it will not be accepted.
- How are “W” and “P”/“CR” calculated in my GPA?There is no impact for “W”. If you have a “P”/“CR”, there is no impact with the GPA and the requirement is shown as met with no units or grade.
- How do I convert my quarter units to semester units?
To convert quarter to semester: quarter units is x 2 divided by 3 to get semester
Example: 6 quarter x 2 = 12 units/3=4 semester units
- Is there a limit on how many times I can repeat TEAS?
CSUSM does not have a limit on how many times students may repeat TEAS.
We will use the highest composite score.
- Can someone help me calculate my points?No. Due to the volume of applications and inquires received, we are unable to conduct pre-calculations/evaluations or provide feedback to applicants.
- Will I receive feedback on my courses or points after I apply?
No. Due to the volume of applications and inquires received, we are unable to provide feedback to applicants. If you are denied, you are welcome to re-apply.

Application
- When does the program begin?
At this time, the ABSN program accepts two cohorts (60 students) to our San Marcos location in the fall (August) and spring (January) and one cohort (60 students) in Temecula each summer (June).
Please note that students can expect to attend classes/labs at both campuses (Temecula and San Marcos), regardless of which location they were admitted to. Deadlines and application links - Do I need to send all transcripts?Yes. We need a full academic record, including AP scores. Applications are not considered complete until all transcripts are received. Incomplete applications are not reviewed. All transcripts should arrive by the deadline. Please plan accordingly.
- Do I need to send AP scores?If any pre-nursing core will be met with AP tests, we will need AP scores. Please plan accordingly, as AP scores can take several months to be sent, received, and processed. Students are encouraged to attach unofficial AP scores to the application. ABSN students can use AP scores to meet the following areas: Written Communication (A2), Statistics, and Introduction to Psychology. Minimum score of 3 is required in order to receive credit.
- Where do I send my transcripts/AP scores?
Official transcripts should be sent to CSU San Marcos.
We accept transcripts through Parchment.

Admission Decisions & Process
- When will I be notified if I’ve been accepted?
Dates may vary each term, but our projected 2025-2026 dates are listed below:

- I didn’t receive an offer of admission or denial, what does this mean?Please refer to your Student Center at my.csusm.edu, if your application status reads “Evaluated”, you are in admission consideration for 1 calendar year from application submission. You will not receive any communication unless admitted to the program. Please understand we are not able to provide individual feedback on your application status or ranking.
- Why was I denied admission?We use a points system to make admissions decisions. Students who don’t meet all requirements and/or don’t have competitive points are denied admission. Denied students are encouraged to review our requirements and points breakdown.
- I received a denial email, what are my next steps?
- If you applied and had pre-nursing coursework in progress or missing, you need to
re-apply once all pre-nursing coursework has been completed.
- If you applied and had a TEAS score below 71%, reapply once you have received a 71%
or higher score.
- Review the ABSN statistics. If your self-assessed points are not competitive (close to the averages), consider retaking pre-nursing coursework and/or TEAS and then reapply for another term
- If you applied and had pre-nursing coursework in progress or missing, you need to
re-apply once all pre-nursing coursework has been completed.
- Can I meet with an Advisor to review my application and points?No. Due to the number of inquiries and applications that we receive, we are unable to meet with one-on-one with denied students.
- Can I re-apply?Yes, students are welcome to re-apply. However, we encourage students to re-apply once they have taken the proper steps to make themselves more competitive.
- How can I make myself more competitive?

Student Experience
- How long is the program?
- What is a cohort?A cohort is a group of students who work through a curriculum together to achieve the same academic degree. Because they are accepted into the same program, take their classes together and graduate together, students in cohorts tend to form a strong support system and professional network that benefits them during their degree program and beyond.
- What does a typical day look like for an ABSN student?This is a daytime, full-time, in-person program. Lectures/classes will be held 1-2 days a week. There is no set class schedule, it will look different each semester. Students can expect to attend classes/labs at both campuses (Temecula and San Marcos), regardless of which location they were admitted to. The schedule for clinical rotations will vary by student and it will look different each term.
- What is the schedule and locations for clinicals?The schedule for clinical rotations will vary. They can take place in the mornings or late at night. Clinicals can be anywhere from Chula Vista to Riverside. This program is full-time commitment.
- May I continue to work during the program?We do not recommend working during the program, but we understand that you may need to. Please make sure that your work is flexible as your school schedule will be set each semester. The Accelerated BSN is a full-time program and will require a major commitment of time to complete. You will be required to complete 67 semester units of study within the five-academic-term program. Approximately 22 units of the program consist of clinical study, which begins as early as 7:00 a.m. or extends as late as 11:00 p.m. Prospective students should take into consideration the demanding nature of this program prior to submitting an application for admission. Clinical rotations may vary by day and time each month; therefore, you should not plan on working while enrolled in this program.
- Are there any classes that need to be completed outside of the program?
You are required to fulfill the following BRN specific courses by the end of the third semester in the program. Some may have been done as part of your first degree. For a list of articulated courses at other institutions, visit the Assist Website. For courses taken out-of-state, please consult your Extended Learning academic advisor.

Cost & Financial Aid
- What is the cost of the program?The rate per unit is $670 and the program includes 67 units. You can find the cost breakdown on our website
- Am I eligible to receive financial aid as a second bachelor's degree student?Yes. Anyone seeking financial aid must submit a FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA between January 1 and March 2 for the following academic year to receive priority consideration for funds. FAFSA Applications are accepted after March 2; however, funding options may be limited. Applications are available in the CSUSM Financial Aid and Scholarship Office and other colleges or local high schools. Be aware that in order to apply for any type of financial aid, all males between the ages of 18 and 26 are required to register with the Selective Service. CSUSM’s Title IV School Code is 030113.
