The Economic Indicators depicted here result from a partnership between the San Diego Business Journal (SDBJ) and California State University San Marcos (CSUSM), which began in 2015.
The College of Business Administration (CoBA) at CSUSM and the SDBJ have made use of CoBA’s Senior Experience program, which matches teams of students with projects submitted by for-profit and non-profit organizations. Each semester since 2015 the Senior Experience teams have created and administered surveys sent to targeted recipients, with the intention to compile data regarding local economic indicators and calculate a semiannual index.
Each index is unique as it is calculated from specific survey responses to questions focused on overall business operations and opportunities in the region. The index uses 50 as a baseline to determine overall confidence; numbers above 50 indicate optimism, while numbers below 50 indicate a lack of confidence. Trends are not published until at least 3 successive semesters of surveys have been administered. There are currently indicators for a General Business Confidence Index, Craft Brewer Confidence Index, Tourism Industry Confidence Index, and soon to be, Biotech Industry Confidence Index..
