Special Consultant Employment
Under general direction, Special Consultants perform special assignments of temporary nature, based on a particular knowledge, ability, or expertise.
Background Checks
Special Consultants may be subject to a background check depending on the nature of duties being performed. Assignment may not begin until background has cleared.
Current CSUSM Employee
If the person you are trying to hire is a current CSUSM employee (in any employment category), the Contractor-Consultant Determination Form does not need to be completed. Please contact your HR Analyst to determine appropriate classification for the additional assignment.
If individual being hired is a current CSUSM faculty member, please contact the Office of Faculty Affairs to ensure the work is not considered faculty bargaining unit work before moving forward.
Non-CSUSM Employee
All non-CSUSM employees must complete the Sign In Process on or before the first day of assignment. This process is legally required and ensures you are paid in a timely manner.
In accordance with the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy, hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside of California is prohibited effective January 1, 2022. This includes Special Consultants.
Rehired Annuitants
Pursuant to California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) post-employment requirements, rehired annuitant hours worked need to be tracked and reported. All rehired annuitants performing duties of a Special Consultant must be classified in the Special Consultant - hourly classification to enable accurate reporting of hours worked.
