Principles of Supervision
The Principles of Supervision workshop focuses on developing supervisory skills with higher education in mind. Through learning, discussion, practice and reflection, participants will gain a greater awareness of their own supervisory skills and learn strategies for more effectively leading others.
Topics include:
- Managing Performance
- Developing Direct Reports
- Guiding and Organizing Work
- Managing Relationships
- Managing Yourself
This online, workshop-style course is offered via 7 interactive modules with asynchronous and synchronous components over a 7-week period.
Principles of Supervision is open to all CSUSM employees responsible for supervising others, with preference given to those who supervise five or more employees. Approval from the participant's Appropriate Administrator is required. Participants must be able to attend all sessions. Space is limited per session.

Leadership How-to Learning Series
As a manager, we have many responsibilities and expectations in our roles. In order to help facilitate the learning of these responsibilities, we have created seven new courses designed specifically for CSUSM’s MPPs. These new classes will review the manager role as it relates to many campus processes and allow an opportunity for interactive learning including Q&A with our subject matter experts.
Courses include:
- Working with Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA)
- Being a Safety and Sustainability Advocate
- Procurement and Accounts Payable at CSUSM
- Understanding the Budget at CSUSM
- Understanding Classification & Compensation at CSUSM
- Approving Travel at CSUSM
- Conducting a Successful Performance Review
