March Focuses on Occupational Wellness

Occupational wellness is preparing and making use of your gifts, skills and talents in order to gain purpose, happiness and enrichment in your life. True occupational wellness involves doing what you love and loving what you do. Everyone is different, and we each have our own piece of the puzzle to contribute. As you search for your unique role in the working world, remember that it's the people who do what they love that truly make the difference. Below are some suggestions to begin your journey to occupational wellness:

  • Take a break! Taking breaks actually improves job performance and it also helps reduce overall work stress.
  • Make a list and be realistic. Use simple time management techniques to reduce stress and improve your ability to get work done, such as making a to-do list or setting mini-goals.
  • Organize your workspace. A clean, neat and organized workspace can reduce feelings of anxiety.
  • Take a class. If you're considering changing careers, or if you just want to sharpen your skills for your current job, signing up for a class is a great place to start. Visit the Fee Waiver Program website to see what you may be eligible for.
  • Find the positive. Instead of ruminating on all the things that went wrong in the workday, focus on the positive: maybe a customer was extra friendly to you or you accomplished a difficult task that you thought you couldn't do.
  • Explore volunteer opportunities that interest you. Volunteering helps improve your mood, makes you feel healthier, increases your sense of purpose, and reduces overall stress levels.
