Drop and Withdrawal Policy

Policy Update Notice
Please note that the policy was updated in August 2023.Students may now drop classes (no W grade) through the day before census.

There are four stages of unenrolling from classes - from dropping to withdrawing.
These include: 

    • Drop: no approval, no reason required. Students can drop through the day before census in MyCSUSM. Course is not listed on the student's transcript.
    • Mid-Session Withdrawal: must be for serious and compelling reason, and approval is required. Student submits petition (including documentation) in MyCSUSM.* If approved, W grade appears on the transcript. Student will appear in grade roster - if W grade is approved prior to grade submission, it will appear in the grade roster
    • Late Withdrawal: must be for serious physical or mental illness, or serious personal or family problems, and approval is required. Student submits petition (including documentation) in MyCSUSM.* If approved, W grade appears on the transcript. Student will appear in grade roster - if W grade is approved prior to grade submission, it will appear in the grade roster. 

*Note: graduate students, and students not matriculated to a degree program must submit a form provided by the Registrar's Office. Student should contact registrar@csusm.edu for assistance. 

Withdrawal Procedure

(1) Student submits petition

(2) Instructor is notified via email.

(3) Petition is reviewed by appropriate Dean or Dean's Designee. See below for chart.

(4) Petition decision is recorded in PeopleSoft and an email notification is sent to the student. 

(5) If approved, the Registrar's Office updates the grade to W.
