University Technology Advisory Council

Charge

The University Technology Advisory Council (UTAC) serves as the primary advisory body to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and the President's Administrative Team (PAT) on matters related to campus technology priorities, strategy, policy, and practice. UTAC provides a collaborative and consultative space where students, faculty, and staff can help shape the university’s technology future.

UTAC's primary responsibilities include

  1. Advises on the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of campus technology initiatives.
  2. Serves as a bridge for two-way communication between Instructional & Information Technology Services (IITS) and the campus community, with committee members serving as advisors and ambassadors, both gathering and disseminating insights from/to their campus constituents.
  3. Consults on policies, standards, and protocols related to technology and digital services.
  4. Identifies and elevates emerging needs, innovations, and concerns from all areas of the university.
  5. Forms subcommittees or task forces as needed to address specialized areas such as data governance, academic innovation, AI, accessibility, and digital equity.

Membership

Council membership shall include the Chief Information Officer as chair, the Chief Enrollment Officer or designee, one academic dean, two student representatives, four college faculty representatives (one from each college)*, two staff representatives from different divisions, one Extended Learning representative, and one Library representative.
* If none of the college faculty representatives are lecturer faculty, then a separate ad hoc seat for a lecturer faculty member will be included on UTAC

Terms and Selection

  • Student representatives are appointed by the ASI President.
  • Faculty representatives will be selected by the Provost from among those nominated.
  • Staff representatives will be selected by the Vice President for Finance & Administrative Services and Provost from among those nominated.
  • Nominations for faculty and staff representatives will be open to the campus and will avoid duplication from the library or Extended Learning.
  • Terms are two years, staggered where possible.

Meetings and Operations

  • UTAC meets every other Tuesday during the academic year or as needed.
  • Recommendations are made through consensus or majority vote, depending on scope.
  • Subcommittee may include UTAC and non-UTAC members to ensure agility and expertise.
