FCC Announces Broadband and Technology Subsidies to Support Eligible Students
This past academic year created historical disruption for many students who faced income loss and other challenges. In response, the FCC will offer broadband and technology subsidies to eligible students (which
includes Pell Grant recipients) through the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, which will start accepting applications May 12th.
The Emergency Broadband Benefit Program will provide up to $50/month discount on broadband service, up to $75/month discount if the household is on qualifying Tribal lands, and a one-time discount of up to $100 for a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer.
Students can visit https://getemergencybroadband.org to check if they qualify for this program and to apply for the discounts if they do.
FCC’s new program is an effort to reduce the digital divide (the gulf between those with easy access to technology and those without), an effort that complements CSUSM’s initiative of distributing free laptops and free wireless hotspots to students
since March 2020.
