*FAQs About Quiz*

  • Can I make a question extra credit?

Unfortunately, no, there is currently no way to make individual questions extra credit. You can make the entire quiz extra credit, but not individual questions.

If you have questions you want to be extra credit, you could create a quiz that just contains these questions and then make the quiz extra credit in the gradebook.

  • Can I have students take a quiz as a group?

No, currently there is no way to allow students to take a quiz as a group. When a student takes a quiz only they can see what they answered, their grade, and any feedback. Other students in the same group would not be able to see any of this information. If you have one person per group complete the quiz, you could manually assign the grade to the other group members in the gradebook. However, the feedback and review options would still only be visible to the student who took the quiz.

An alternative would be to set up an Assignment instead of a Quiz. Unlike Quizzes, Assignments can be set to group submission so that all members of the group see the submission, feedback, and grade. Please see our help guides on Assignments for more information.

  • I need to give a student extra time, extra attempts, or set a different start/end time for a Quiz. How do I do this?
Yes, you can give individual students a different open date, close date, timing, and/or number of attempts. Please see the help guide "Change quiz timing for 1 or more students" for steps on how to do so.
  • I set up a User Override but there is an error message underneath. What do I do?

Does the error look similar to this?

    user override error

If so, it likely just means that the quiz is hidden. Students cannot take quizzes that are hidden, even if they are open. Once the quiz is made visible (again, different than being open), this message should be gone.

  • Why can't my students see their quiz score?

The visibility of the Quiz score in the gradebook depends on what you have set in the Review Options section of the quiz settings. If your quiz has a close date, go to the Review Options section and under "After the quiz is closed" check the box for Points. Save. The score should then be visible in the gradebook. Keep in mind this only applies if the quiz is closed for everyone, if there is a User Override that is still open then "After the quiz is closed" will not take effect until that override closes and the grade will remain hidden until then.

If the quiz does not have a close date, go to the Review Options section and under "Later, while the quiz is still open" check the box for Points. Save. The score should then be visible in the gradebook.

Also, make sure the quiz is visible on the course homepage. If you hide a quiz on your course homepage, the column will also be hidden in the gradebook for students.

  • My students say the gradebook shows a Quiz as Dropped. Why is that and how do I fix it?
If you didn't set up the gradebook to drop the lowest score(s) then the grade is likely dropped because the grade item is hidden. By default hidden items are dropped from students' category and course totals.

Quiz results are hidden until the point in time designated in the Review Options section of the Quiz settings. You can choose to show the Points (grade) once a student submits or after the quiz is closed for everyone. Until that point the grade item is hidden, so the gradebook will show Dropped for that activity for students. After that point, scores will be visible and it should no longer say Dropped.
  • Can I change the point value of a Quiz after students have taken it?
Yes, you can. While viewing the quiz, click the gear icon in the upper right to open the Quiz Administration block. Click on Edit Quiz. In the upper right, set the new Maximum Grade in the upper right. Click Save. The scores should be automatically adjusted.
  • How do I throw out a question after students have taken the quiz?

You cannot delete questions after students have already started taken the quiz. To neutralize a question there are two options: make the question worth 0 points or, for multiple choice questions, give everyone full credit for that question.

To make the question worth 0 points, go to the Edit Quiz page and go to the question. Click the pencil icon on the right of the question. Type in 0 and then click the Enter key. You might then need to regrade the quiz. To do so, click on the gear icon in the upper right and then click on Results. Scroll down to the Results table and above the table click the "Regrade all" button.

To give full credit to everyone (for multiple choice questions), go to the Edit Quiz page and click on the question. Scroll down to the answer choices and for each one set the Grade to 100%. Save changes. You might then need to regrade the quiz. To do so, click on the gear icon in the upper right and then click on Results. Scroll down to the Results table and above the table click the "Regrade all" button.

  • Whenever I import a quiz it brings over my whole Question Bank again. Is there any way to import a quiz without bringing over the whole Question Bank again?

Yes, it is true that every time you import a Quiz, the entire Question Bank comes with it, which can result in duplicates in your Question Bank.

To import a Quiz without bringing over the Question Bank you would need to use Respondus in CougarApps. There are two parts: first, export the desired Quiz to Respondus, and then second, import the Quiz from Respondus into the specified course.

    1. Follow steps 1-16 of this help guide to export your quiz to Respondus (opens in a new window).
    2. Then, follow these steps to import the quiz into the desired course (opens in a new window).
