Create Quiz Questions

Why Do This

You can create quiz questions directly in your course in two places: right within a quiz and in the Question Bank. If you only want to use the questions for this one specific quiz, then you can create the questions directly within the quiz. If you want to be able to use the same questions in another quiz or create a randomized quiz where the system randomly pulls a designated number for a pool of questions, then you will want use the Question Bank and organize your questions into categories.


Create Questions Within a Quiz

  1. If you just set up your quiz and clicked "Save and display" proceed to step 3. If not, log onto Cougar courses and go into your course.
  2. Go to the topic/section where your quiz is located.
  3. Click on the quiz name. Click on the gear icon in the upper right to open the Administration block and select Edit quiz.

4. Click the Add dropdown just above the page where you want to add the question, and select a new question

5. Select the desired question type.

6. Click Next.

General Settings 

The fields will vary depending on question type selected. For more information on specific question types and associated fields, please see this Question Types guide.

  • Question name: enter a short, descriptive name. This is displayed in list of - students do not see this. Make sure it is unique.
  • Question text: enter your question text or instructions. Use the text editor to format text, add images or links to your question.
  • Default Points: change the question’s point value if desired.
  • Optional: Check the box next to "Shuffle the choices" to shuffle the answer choices for the question for each attempt. You will want to uncheck this box if you have answer choices such as "All of the above," "None of the above," "A & B," etc.
  • Complete any additional question specific fields.
  • Optional: General feedback: type general feedback, that will be shown based on the settings enabled in the Review Options section of the quiz.

7.  Scroll to the bottom and click Save changes, or select Save changes and continue editing, if you are still working on that question. 

8. Repeat steps 4-7 for each additional question.

Other Settings on the Edit Quiz Page

  • In the upper right, set the overall grade for the quiz in the box for Maximum Grade. Click Save.
  • Below that, check the box for Shuffle to shuffle the order of the questions for each attempt.
  • In the upper left, click the Repagniate button In the upper left, click the Repaginate button to change the page breaks. We recommend no more than 5 questions per page.  
  • Click and drag the arrows to the left of a question to move the question.
  • Click the gear icon to the left of a question to edit the question.
  • Click the magnifying glass icon to right of a question to preview the question.
  • Click the pencil icon to the right of a question to change the point value of the question. When finished hit Enter,
  • Click the X to the right of a question to delete the question.


Create and Organize Questions within the Question Bank

Create Categories

  1. From your course homepage, click on the gear icon in the upper right to open the Administration block, then click Question Bank.
  2. Click on the Categories tab.

3. Scroll down to Add category section.

4. Choose the parent category if you want this new category to be a subcategory of another. If not, keep the default (your course name) category. 

5. Enter a Name for the category or subcategory you are creating.

6. Click the Add category button.

7. On the Categories tab you can edit category names (click the gear icon for the category), delete a category (click the X for the category), or move a category (arrows for the category).

Add Questions to a Category

  1. Click on the Questions tab.

  2. Use the dropdown to Select a Category to add the question to.

  3. Click "Create a new question."
  4. Select a question type. Note: select a question type to see a description of that type.

  5. Click Next.

Once saved, your question will be saved to the category you selected in step 2 above.

Move Questions between Categories

  1. In the question bank, use the dropdown to select the Category containing the questions you want to move.
  2. Check the box to the left of the questions to move.
  3. Scroll to the bottom and under With Selection  use the dropdown to select the category you want to move the questions to.
  4. Click the Move to button. The questions will then be moved to the selected category.
